'Guildford In Harmony' with Oakleaf!

Making a triumphant return for the second year, the wonderful ‘Guildford In Harmony’ concert was introduced by Oakleaf Patron, Dame Penelope Keith, and presented by the irrepressible co-founder of Guildford Shakespeare Company, Matt Pinches. Oakleaf ‘make life work with mental illness’, and no better way than to assemble five magnificent choirs and enjoy an inspiring evening of great song. The choirs all deserve special mention; Guildford Vox; Guildford Jazz; Guildford County School; Bellow Fellows (all the way from North London!) and the recently formed Everyman Choir. Everyman (below) are an all-male choir formed through Oakleaf itself, and are led by the fantastic Roger Pinsent. Roger was ill and could not attend, but all present wish you a speedy recovery Roger – they did you proud! (and thanks to Dom for standing in at short notice). A great evening of entertainment, with a friendly welcome for all from Trustee, Paul Charlesworth (left) and CEO, Clive Stone, (second right). We can see that Matt (front) is rather used to being in photos!!

Patronal Day Concert at St Catherine's School, Bramley

Headmistress Alice Phillips and Chairman of Governors, Peter Martin welcomed Lord Lieutenant Michael and Sarah More-Molyneux, Civic Dignitaries and proud families and friends to this annual celebration of patronal day. And what a celebration! Pupils had already enjoyed a day full of events, including an early Xmas Dinner, but had plenty of energy and talent in reserve to deliver a concert of the highest quality. As St Catherine’s Day is also Thanksgiving in the USA, it was wholly appropriate that Gershwin compositions began and ended the programme, with girls throughout the school fully engaged in the various orchestras, choirs, brass ensemble, and wind/fife & drum/jazz bands, superbly organised by Matthew Greenfield (right). Talented members of the sixth form musicians and singers, were delighted to join Nick Williams, Mayor of Godalming (left) and Mary Foryszewski, Deputy Mayor of Waverley, for a final farewell!

Lord Chief Justice Sets The Scene!

Excellent diary planning (by Gill!) ensured that the address by The Lord Chief Justice, Lord Burnett, to the AGM of the Association of High Sheriffs of England & Wales in London on Wednesday, was followed by my introduction to the Family Court in Guildford on Thursday. Lord Burnett identified his key priorities as Modernisation; Improvement to Infrastructure and Recruitment. Throughout my memorable visit to Guildford Family Court, organised by His Honour Judge Peter Nathan, Designated Family Judge for Surrey, I was able to fully understand the essential nature of those three priority areas. I spend time throughout the day with many of the Circuit and District Judges, and was able to express sincere thanks on behalf of all Surrey residents for their dedication and service to our community.

Woking Asian Business Forum Provides Festive Message To All!

Inspired by Shahid Azeem, second right (High Sheriff in Nomination for 2020-21), the Woking Asian Business Forum have, for the eleventh year, gifted the impressive Xmas tree in Jubilee Square to everyone in Woking. A thoughtful action much appreciated by Woking Borough Council, High Sheriff and everyone in the local community. Watch out for the celebrity switching on of the lights!

Royal Visit to Royal Alexandra & Albert School

Her Royal Highness The Duchess Of Gloucester visited RAAS today as part of the activities to celebrate the founding of the school 260 years ago, and to formally reopen the newly refurbished Gatton Hall Boarding House, now home to the very appreciative members of the Sixth Form!

Headmaster, Mark Dixon (left), and Chair of Governors, Bill Gillen, were supported throughout by Madie, Head Girl, and Kieron, Head Boy. As always the hospitality was excellent, and the meal in the ballroom for ‘dignitaries and ‘Foundationer’ pupils, past and present, just what was needed on a cold winter day! One other 260 year old was observing lunch – the Act Of Parliament Clock (so-called because the internal cogs were made of wood, to avoid a tax on metal all those years ago) – wonderful history!

CrimeStoppers UK Call Centre Always Available For 'Fearless Youth'

Ian Chandler, Chair of Voluntary Surrey CrimeStoppers Committee (left); Louise, Head of Contact Services Centre (right) and Emily, ‘Fearless Youth’ Outreach Worker (centre) joined Glenys Balchin, Regional Manager, Surrey & Sussex, in welcoming a ‘continuity’ of Surrey High Sheriffs, with Bridget Biddell, High Sheriff In Nomination (second left), keen to understand the excellent work undertaken by this national charity. Supervisor Tony, explained the impressive details behind the 24/7, 365 days/year operation of the Call Centre, and the role of the 50+ members of staff. The ‘Fearless Youth’ initiative was of particular interest, given the specific intent to reach 11-16 year olds, who need the security of guaranteed anonymity for which CrimeStoppers has been famous for the last thirty years. An inspired initiative which will be closely followed and supported by the Surrey Shrievalty!

Chief Scout Gold Awards – Reigate District

County Commissioner, Joe Rogerson (left) and Assistant County Commissioner, Paul Iverson, welcomed Dorothy Ross-Tomlin, the Mayor of Reigate & Banstead, to the third Chief Scout Gold Award ceremony of the year, held this time in Reigate District. Proud families, friends and leaders gathered to celebrate the achievements of the 57 young people receiving the Gold Award. An ideal opportunity to say ‘Thank You’ to the 3,400 adult volunteers across the Surrey Scouts movement for their priceless service to our community!

Latest 10 Y.E.S. Graduates!

Gomshall Fire Station was the venue for the latest Graduation Ceremony of the Youth Engagement Scheme, when 10 new Graduates received their certificates from Chief Fire Officer Steve Owen-Hughes at a moving ceremony attended by many families, friends and supporters. Sharp eyed readers will notice that there are only 9 certificates – that is because unexpected family circumstances meant that one young graduate had to miss the event at the last moment. But don’t worry Alex from Blue Squad, I have it on the highest authority that Mark and Bryn will be identifying an opportunity for a personal presentation soon!

A Magnificent Venue to raise Awareness of CFS!

Sir Stephen Lamport, Vice President of the Community Foundation For Surrey, is also Receiver General of Westminster Abbey, and generously arranged for CFS Chairman David Frank, CEO Laura Thurlow, Director of Philanthropy, Joe Crome, and the CFS team to utilise this magnificent venue as an opportunity to highlight the activities of this essential county-wide charity, raising Local Philanthropy for Local Needs!

Engaging Surrey Youth Focus AGM

Thanks to SCC Chairman, Tony Samuels (third left), County Hall was the scene of the Surrey Youth Focus AGM with a difference! Lord Lieutenant and SYF President, Michael More-Molyneux (centre), SYF Chairman, Alister McGowan (third right) and CEO, Cate Newnes-Smith (second right) welcomed partners and funders to a lively programme of presentations and discussion. The real difference was provided by the three Social Change case studies presented with great professionalism and passion by;

Courtney Giles, Epsom PHAB (right) – whose 100 members and 50 volunteers meet at NESCOT

Paul Napthine, YMCA Guildford (second left) – on Supported Housing: ‘More Than A Room’

Dr Ann Kenney, Halo Project (centre) – on ‘Disability Works” and their great partnership with Waitrose.

A thought provoking review of ‘The Social Change Project’ by Sue Tibballs, CEO Sue McKecknie Foundation, completed an excellent agenda.
