Woodhouse Centre & 'Men In Sheds' Thriving!

Irrepressible Centre Manager, Dee Graham (second left) and Sarah (centre) welcomed the Chairman of Tandridge, David Cooley, and Consort, Pam, as we all paid a visit to the now-famous Woodhouse Centre in Oxted. The charity was founded by Betty Woodhouse all the way back in 1971, and is still as popular as ever, maintaining their proud position in the community as ‘The Local Charity that Supports Local People’. All retired and disabled people are made to feel right at home and the tales they can tell will keep you entertained for weeks on end! We even met a couple who have now become engaged, having met at the Woodhouse Centre – our very best wishes for their future together. Becoming almost as well know is the ‘Men in Sheds’ initiative, enabling men (or indeed women!) to get together and carry out any practical initiatives they are interested in. More pics will follow, but for now here is what a ‘Men in Sheds’ strategy session looks like – I was told that their most important tool is a mug!

CrimeStoppers Support 'fearless.org'

Chair Ian Chandler welcomed a packed house to the ‘CrimeStoppers in Surrey Fundraising Dinner 2019’ at Glenmore House, to celebrate the charity’s 30th birthday and to hear a remarkable presentation from renowned expert Mike Neville on the subject of ‘Super Recognisers’. Guests enjoyed an excellent meal and the combined efforts raised well over £3,500 on the evening – all destined to ensure that the excellent work of CrimeStoppers in Surrey may both continue and thrive. Much focus was on the new ‘fearless’ initiative (see below) and Surrey’s dedicated Fearless Youth Worker, Emily, was able to express her thanks to the Police & Crime Commissioner, David Munro, whose office is providing funding for this critical work with young people.

South East High Sheriffs Gather at Surrey University!

An impressive ‘posse’ of past, present and future High Sheriffs, partners and Under Sheriffs gathered for the SE Regional Forum yesterday, held at the University of Surrey.

The counties of Kent, East Sussex, West Sussex and the Greater London bailiwick were all represented, and guest speakers included Hugh Tollemache (third row, left), Chair of the High Sheriffs’ Association (HSA) of England & Wales, and Elizabeth Hunter (first row, left), HSA Council Link to the Regions. A particular focus of the annual gathering is to provide support, counsel and inspiration to High Sheriffs in Nomination, who will begin their terms of office in March/April. We were extremely fortunate to be addressed by Surrey’s finest (HH Judge Robert Fraser; HH Judge Alison Raeside; Karon Goodfellow JP; ACC Nev Kemp, Sgt Graham Kerslake and Lady Louise O’Connor), who made this humble citizen of the county very proud indeed! A very successful event was Chaired by my predecessor Robert Napier DL (front, second right), and Patricia was a true star of the gathering as she shared the secrets of the role of ‘consort!’

Mayor of Surrey Heath Chooses Alzheimer Cafe and 'Man With a Pan'!

Mayor Dan Adams (right) selected two very worthy causes for recognition with a High Sheriff’s Certificate for ‘great and valuable services to the community’ of Surrey Heath. Maureen Hulme (centre) accepted the Award on behalf of the renowned Alzheimer Cafe, which caters for their many loyal followers once a month at St Mary’s Church, Camberley.

And preparing an excellent chilli in the kitchen was ‘Man With A Pan’, Robin Van Creveld (centre below) and his team – a great example of community spirit, support and cooperation – all driven by these wonderful volunteers!

Guidance and advice was also available throughout the evening from the expert team from Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust, led by Ablen Dacalos (left), who presented a powerful explanation of ‘Anger and Fear’ aa they relate to dementia.

Community Research Hub Arrives @ The Lit!

Royal Holloway University of London (RHUL) Community Research Hub has a new home with Egham Museum, all courtesy of The Literary Institute, Egham. This great example of community cooperation was the brainchild of Emilio (left), Team Leader at RHUL’s Volunteering Team, who also raised the necessary funds from the RH University Student Opportunities Fund and The Community Foundation For Surrey. Phil (right), Volunteering Manager, and Louise (second right), Volunteering Project Coordinator, joined Sarah (left), Egham Museum Curator, in welcoming local charities, non-profit organisations and social enterprises – all of whom can now consider making use of the research services offered by the talented RHUL students on a pro-bono basis.

All present enjoyed an excellent lunch provided by the EdAble Social Kitchen team from Addlestone Community Centre – definitely on the HS’s agenda for a visit!

Mayor of Runnymede Identifies Ann Goodison for Special Award!

Mayor Dolsie Clarke had no hesitation in nominating Ann Goodison for a special High Sheriff’s Award for outstanding voluntary activity in Runnymede Borough. Ann makes and designs her own candles, jewellery and gifts for sale from her prominent location at The River Bourne Club (courtesy of the Manager, Simon, and his enthusiastic staff – superb support from this local company). Husband Brian does an excellent job in supporting Ann, whether through acting as chauffeur, or as the ‘Mr Fixit’ in terms of setting up displays etc. All of Ann’s growing sales go to Woking and Sam Beare Hospices, and her current fundraising has now topped a very impressive £6,700 – What a brilliant example of voluntary service!

Grand Opening of Drama Studio at Therfield School!

Chair of Governors, Rob Hart (right), and inspirational Headteacher, James Malley (second right) welcomed a packed house of family, friends and dignitaries (inc local councillor Joe Crome, left) to a stimulating ‘first night’ in the new Drama Studio. Drama Teachers, Steph (left) and Sofie (centre), had arranged four excellent performances by the students, including the renowned year 10 version of Macbeth much admired lately at the Swan Theatre itself. As James emphasised, the entire teaching and support staff at Therfield act as one large team, ensuring that all pupils are fully included in a broad range of activities. This was recognised in the recent ‘Good’ Ofsted visit which specifically recognised this powerful approach towards ‘inclusion’. Special thanks to Headteacher’s PA, Catherine, whose superb skills in terms of organisation, catering and photography (above) were much appreciated!

Amazing Vocational Areas at St Piers College!

Assistant Principal, Franky (left), and Lead For Employability, Wendy (centre), proudly led a tour of the imaginative and inspiring vocational areas blossoming alongside the well established farm. All 110 students at the college will be able to become actively involved with a broad range of activities, from the new Tea Rooms (above – official opening in March) through to the excellent ‘Fleece to Fibre’ cabin where wool from the farm is processed and turned into imaginative articles for sale (just look at the impressive cushion in the photo!) Cllr Lesley Steeds (above) joined me for the visit, and we found out about the amazing ladies of the East Grinstead Spinners, who have kindly been guiding the St Piers College teachers in the almost forgotten art of spinning. I am assured that the ‘Spinners’ will be first on the list of guests to be invited to the opening!

'What Will be Left For Mums With Babies & Toddlers Around Lingfield?'

This was the passionate question raised by all mums present at this morning’s busy session at St Piers Children’s Centre, which is scheduled to be closed later in the year. Several of the regulars became very emotional as they explained the crucial role Lidia (left), Charmaine (right, back) and the team have played in their lives – not just by providing great opportunities to meet other mums, but also as advisors and supporters through the often difficult phases in the lives of all young families. They also emphasised how essential it is to have other professionals present at the centre throughout the week, so that help was readily, and discreetly to hand. In spite of the depressing topic of conversation several of the young users and mums joined for a photo!

Guidance that some facilities will be available after the closure in Caterham has been met with astonishment, as reaching such a location involves a one hour bus ride each way. Lidia is hopeful that a new provider organisation (charity or not for profit) will be found to help keep the Children’s Centre open – PLEASE, CAN ANYONE HELP?
