The High Sheriff visits Guildford Magistrates Courts.
The High Sheriff has an important role to support the county’s judiciary. As part of his duties Mr Azeem visited Guildford Magistrate’s Courts where he saw first-hand the important role carried out by Surrey’s volunteer magistrates. He met with senior magistrates who deal with adult criminal, youth and family cases in Surrey. During a tour of the courthouse the High Sheriff also met with legal, security and custody staff, in addition to observing courts in session. He also received a briefing on the history of the magistracy and its modern day role.
Mr Azeem said, “Surrey’s 180 or so voluntary magistrates play a vital role in delivering a vital public service for our local communities. I was impressed by the professionalism and commitment demonstrated by magistrates and staff alike. Across England and Wales magistrates resolve around 95% of all criminal cases, which really does highlight the contribution they make to our country and communities across Surrey.”
