Royal British Legion Surrey Poppy Launch

The 2022 Poppy Launch in the County took place in All Saint’s Church, the former Guard’s Chapel, at the Army Training Centre, Alexander Barracks, Pirbright. Lt Col. Shamus Kelly OBE RRF Commanding Officer Headquarter Regiment ATC welcomed the Lord Lieutenant Mr Michael More-Molyneux and guests. Brigadier Paul Evans OBE DL the President of the RBL Surrey made introductory remarks which included the great need of finance to support those badly injured in combat. Reverend Roland Olliff led the prayers prior to Brigadier Evans making the Exhortation. One minute’s silence preceded his speaking the Kohima Epitaph. Dame Penelope Keith DBE DL reflected on Poppy Day and its history before reading John McCrae’s famous poem “In Flanders Fields”.

In the past year £1.1m was raised by the RBL in Surrey, an excellent achievement and Peter Wakeham a RBL Fundraiser, thanked those who collected street donations in all weathers and everybody who supported the RBL.

Sandra Gayer, who is blind, beautifully and movingly sang “Amazing Grace” which many found emotional. She received prolonged applause.

The Lord Lieutenant then handed out the first poppies in Surrey before thanking Sandra Gayer, the Commanding Officer, and the RBL for their dedicated work on behalf of all those who need their support.
