Best Wishes To All The Brilliant Staff, Support Team and Volunteers At St Peter's Hospital!

What a great way to spend Xmas Eve! Welcomed by Chairman, Andy Field (centre – cool jumper!), CEO, Suzanne Rankin (left), and reception staff Jo (centre – winner of the jumper competition!) and Jillie, we were invited to join Dolsie Clarke, Mayor of Runnymede, with Consort, Dr Brian Perry, as they toured the hospital to meet the outstanding members of the St Peter’s team, many of whom will be on duty throughout the holiday period.

The hospitality everywhere we went was amazing, not least in the Children’s Centre;

We were also able to see some of the quite amazing entrants into the ‘doors’ competition run across both Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals. The skill, imagination and sheer creativity on display was astonishing, as you can see;

In Audiology, with Alex, above;

And Endoscopy, where each member of staff had cut out their own handprints, and included ‘baubles’ of genuine patient comments.

Our thanks to you all for a wonderful visit!

Candle-lit Service at St Mary's, with the Mayor of Elmbridge

Mayor of Elmbridge, Shweta Kapadia (centre), and Consort, Ramesh (right), joined the Rector of St Mary’s in welcoming many civic dignitaries to the packed congregation (including, from left, Consort & Mayor of Runnymede, with the Mayoress & Mayor of Guildford). We were gathered to enjoy this traditional Service of Nine Lessons and Carols, supported by the renowned Choir. There was even a world premiere of an anthem composed specially for those talented choristers!

Wonderful to be able to salute the plaque behind us on the wall of the Community Hall, commemorating the opening in 2007 by the then High Sheriff of Surrey, Nicholas Sealy!

Surprise 16th Celebrations for High Sheriff's Police Cadet!

Dad, Mo, and Mum, Ummah, ensured that Naeel’s birthday celebrations were a closely held secret between family (travelling from far and wide, some from Mauritius itself!) and friends, who gathered at Ruxley Church to surprise the unsuspecting High Sheriff’s Police Cadet!

Many friends from the Epsom & Ewell Volunteer Police Cadet Unit also joined the throng and shared the stage with Naeel. Younger brother, Zinedine (on my right), who is also a Cadet, proved to be an expert baker – Naeel’s impressive Birthday cake was all Zin’s own work!

Age UK Surrey Carol Concert Draws Support Across The County!

The Chairman, John Burbridge (centre), was delighted to welcome the Lord Lieutenant, Michael More-Molyneux, and the massed ranks of the Mayors and Chairs across Surrey, to a packed Cathedral for this hugely popular annual Carol Service on behalf of Age UK Surrey. It is so important at this time of year that we all support this excellent charity providing vital services in later life for so many in the community. From left; Brian Perry (Mayor’s Consort, Runnymede); Dolsie Clarke (Mayor of Runnymede); Polly Russell-Stracey (Mayor’s Consort, Waverley); Denise Le Gal (Mayor, Waverley); Raj Haque (Chairman Mole Valley); Lynda Billington (Deputy Mayoress, Guildford); Richard Billington (Deputy Mayor of Guildford); Will Forster (Mayor of Woking); Shweta Kapadia (Mayor of Elmbridge) and Ramesh Kapadia (Mayor’s Consort, Elmbridge).

The Guildford Cathedral Singers were perfect, as ever, and organist Martina Smyth excelled! The Rock Choir numbered over 100 members, and were conducted by the talented Tom George as they gave beautiful renditions of Hallelujah and Keeping the Dream Alive, in addition to a faultless carol medley.

A memorable occasion indeed!

Planning For An Impactful Conference For Surrey Primary Heads On Tues 8 Jan!

Delighted to be invited with Lady Louise O’Connor (back), to join Kate Keane (Chair of Primary Phase Headteachers Group, left), Mary Ellen McCarthy (Vice-Chair, next) together with Kerry and Anne from SCC, to discuss this critical conference planned to ‘shine a light’ on the complex issue of the permanent exclusion of pupils from primary schools. It will be a seminal conference, so get booked in now! Collective best wishes to Kerry as she begins a new career in the HE sector – we will all miss you Kerry, many thanks for all of your invaluable support and guidance!

Kane FM Youth Projects Visit

A great opportunity to meet Jenniann Davies, the driving force of Kane FM, and to receive expert tuition on being a DJ from Ivan (left, with Gid, right, who still keeps his hand in as a DJ as well as working on ‘MindWaves’). Ivan is one of over 100 volunteer broadcasters at this innovative and impactful station, which consistently reaches audiences no-one else can! The current team working on the highly successful Kane FM Youth Projects ‘MindWaves’ programme is five strong (Martin could not be with us), so I was able to receive a full briefing from Jenniann, Gid, Mary (Peer Mentor, left) and Eleni (Employability & Life Skills). A great team!

'Mary's Knitting' – Surrey Hill's Innovative Nativity Performance

Led by Headteacher, Jennie Ratcliffe (my left), and coached by creative teachers (from left), Miss King, Miss Warren and Mrs Thompson, the excellent cast of “Mary’s Knitting’ delivered a very professional and highly entertaining Nativity performance which had the crowded audience on their feet time and again. A few of the successful participants were able to join our celebratory photo at the end (many thanks to Kate from the Good Shepherd Trust for stepping in as photographer!) In case anyone is worried by the plot – Mary did indeed finish her knitting in time, as you can tell from her smile!

Inspiring Awards Evening at Priory School!

Head Teacher, Rachel Gibb, with Head Students, Kiara and James, led a truly inspiring Awards Evening at Priory School in Dorking. The depth and breadth of young talent present, including many students returning after experiencing their first term at University, provided ample evidence that Surrey’s future is certainly in good hands! Congratulations also to the excellent staff and support team at Priory School for their energy, enthusiasm, professionalism and the amazing culinary skills evidenced on the night, in collaboration with all of the student chefs!!

Carol Service at HMP Highdown

At the invitation of Governor, Sally Hill, and the R.C.Chaplain, Anna Cassar, a packed house thoroughly enjoyed a rousing Carol Service, sprinkled with excellent readings and a powerful Christmas Address from Revd Bob Wilson. My favourite item had to be ‘While Shepherds Watched’….sung by the High Down Music Group to the tune of House Of The Rising Sun (for a Geordie, such creative use of the old Animals music really struck a chord!)

Winners of 'Headway' 2018 Photo Competition!

Mayor of Guildford, Mike Parsons, shared the duties as we presented prizes to the three finalists in this year’s competition. But no names at this point, because Headway Chairman, Keith Churchouse, and CEO, Sonja Freebody, would like everyone to buy the 2019 calendar, which includes the great pictures from our fine winners, to uncover the details!
