If You Go Down to the Woods Today….
You are sure of a big surprise. You might come across a busy group of children making and decorating wooden benches, collecting firewood or making scary Halloween masks. Yesterday I joined a happy group of children aged 6 to 14 doing just that at the Foxhills Community Camp near Chertsey.
Ian from the Big Hat Bushcamp and his team taught the children how to saw, split and sand the wood safely and decorate it with either paint, a pyrography pen or even a blow torch! The campfire was lit without using matches and the children were treated to toffee apples cooked over the open fire. How delicious!
The Foxhills Community Camps provide free holiday camps for disadvantaged children across Surrey during the summer holidays and the october half term break. Organised by Runnymede Borough Council and funded by the Hayton Charitable Trust, the programme was created to help parents and carers who may not otherwise be able to find affordable childcare during the holidays.
